Bloomsday at Bewley’s Grafton Street

‹ Back to overview

Bewley’s Grafton Street has a long and loving association with Irish writers. It is with huge delight that we celebrate Bloomsday in Bewley’s Grafton Street on Sunday, June 16th. Customers can enjoy live performances throughout the day from veteran actors Donal O’Kelly and Joe Taylor.

Donal will be performing his internationally acclaimed show Joyced! – a whirlwind odyssey through Joyce’s Dublin years and the events that would be later immortalized in Ulysses. The RTE Guide describe it as “Everything about this tantalising performance is memorable … nothing short of ‘genius inspired by genius”.

Joe will be presenting Ulysses: a Beginner’s Guide – a highly entertaining introduction to the great novel. Customers can enjoy these shows in our Johnson’s Court room as well as ad hoc extracts from Ulysses throughout the entire building. Seats are limited and will be given to those who arrive first on the day.

Shows start at 12 noon and will be repeated throughout the day until 4pm – if you miss one there is only a short time for the next show to begin!

Bewley’s Cafe Theatre is proud to present for Bloomsweek, in association with the Bloomsday Festival, Blooming Ulysses by Gerry Farrell.

Blooming Ulysses is a one-man stage adaptation by Gerry Farrell of James Joyce’s Ulysses that invites the audience to accompany the central protagonist Leopold Bloom on his wanderings around Dublin. It is a humorous and energetic performance that has been acclaimed by theatregoers and academics alike and serves as an excellent introduction to the novel. This fine production has travelled the world receiving rave reviews wherever it goes and we are delighted to present it at Bewley’s for the Bloomsday festival.

“An incredible performance that brought this great work to life …..Gerry moved with ease from the meandering stream of consciousness of Bloom …. to the energetic and hilarious Citizen in the Cyclops episode. This is a must see show for anyone interested in understanding and enjoying this great work”.
Professor Gordon Turnbull Yale University USA
