A stirring history…
It was an act of immense courage that began the history of the company we know today as Bewley’s. In 1835, Samuel Bewley and his son Charles dared to break the East India Company’s monopoly by importing nearly 3,000 chests of tea from China.
Their venture was risky—but it turned out to be more successful than anyone could possibly imagine, changing the taste of a nation, and having a bigger effect down the centuries than either man could begin to guess at.
Ultimately, this great adventure led to the foundation of one of Ireland’s most popular and respected brands. Bewley’s. By 1870, Samuel’s other sons, Joshua and Thomas, had joined the company. A legend was stirring.
…brewing a worldwide success.
From such adventurous beginnings, Bewley’s has grown to become the market leader in fresh ground coffee in Ireland. Many hotels, restaurants and cafes are proudly serving Bewley's coffee. You’ll also find Bewley’s teas and coffees in supermarkets around the country.
But we’re not just thriving in Ireland. As part of the Campbell Bewley Group, Bewley’s is a multimillion-euro phenomenon, diversifying and expanding all the time. In the U.S., Bewley’s has acquired Rebecca’s Cafés, and has merged with Java City, a roasting, wholesale and retail company based in Sacramento. So we’re well placed to bring Ireland’s favourite teas and coffees to new markets around the world.
Welcome to Bewley’s. An Irish success story well worth talking about…over a cup of tea or coffee.
